Remember when writing and penmanship was a way of life?

One of the many things I miss is letter writing and the importance of penmanship. Believe it or not, at one time, penmanship was taught as a subject in most schools. You passed or failed the course based on your ability to write legibly.

Fast forward forty years and the art of writing has disappeared. I am amazed at the lack of importance placed on one’s ability to be able to read and write cursive. This to some must seem obsolete but take under consideration the need for signatures on legal documents. I understand that computerization has replaced many things, but should it replace writing? I find it sad that schools no longer find the need to teach penmanship and depend totally on computers. It is similarly sad to see children reading from their phones, computer, or iPad rather than books. Books are articles that are cherished and passed on for others to enjoy not placed in a file to probably never be accessed again.

Writing and transcribing is important to keeping a historical record….

It may not be cool, but we need to have tangible letters and thoughts jotted down on pieces of paper, Bibles that reflect births and death of family members. These things will be treasures later for generations to come. I know this probably can be done on a computer, but believe me, it will not have the joy and excitement as you look it over.

I am saddened that I did not sit with my mother and father and write down things of importance, such as recipes and instructions that I could later use. But I too did not sense a value to these things at that time in my life. Do not make the same mistake that I did. Talk to your parents and grandparents and take notes of their thoughts and history.

God directs us to keep a record….

In the Bible God tells us to write down information. See Habakkuk 2:2 – and the Lord answered me and said, write the vision, and make it plain on tablets, that He may run who read it.

Leaving a physical record of your family history, your church history, your life allows others to see and remember who you are. To know what you accomplished in your lifetime. To share with the younger generations your thoughts and experiences.

Although we exist in a digital world. Do not let cellphones, computers and gaming systems take away one of our most important vehicles of communication – the written word.
